the police refuse to investigate.
When Hallie and Reed attempt to secure
that proof, what they unearth is beyond their worst fears. And

"Someone poisoned you?"
Kyle blinked a yes.
"Who?"
Kyle's lips opened to speak, then froze.
"Quick, lay him on his back," Hallie said.
Reed eased him onto the floor and watched pain twist his brother's
face. His eyes darted wildly, then seemed to go blank as he fell
unconscious. Frothy saliva slid from the corner of his mouth.
Quickly, Hallie tilted his head back and placed her fingers beside
his Adam's apple to check for a pulse. "Phone 911!"
She breathed hard into his mouth, placed her palms over his heart,
pushed down, and began CPR.
Dazed, Reed hurried to the phone and dialed 911. Two rings...
three... four... Answer the damn phone! he shouted silently.
Finally, someone picked up. He described Kyle's condition to a
woman who calmly told him to continue CPR until MedExpress arrived
in minutes. The ambulance was not far, she promised.
Reed's pulse pounded in his ears as he knelt beside Hallie and
helped with CPR. He felt semi-present, as though someone else's
hands were pushing down on Kyle's chest. Each minute his brother
did not respond, Reed's panic grew.
Minutes later, the ambulance screamed into his driveway. Doors
opened and slammed. He continued CPR as Hallie let in two paramedics.
She explained she was a doctor, mumbled medical jargon and rushed
them over to Kyle.
Reed backed away, searching their eyes for hope, seeing none.
Quickly, they opened a blue defibrillator unit beside Kyle.
From white bags they took two paddles, stripped off the coverings,
pressed the paddles on Kyle's chest and connected the electrical
cables. The blond paramedic pushed a panel button, and the console
screen displayed a flat green line.
The paramedics looked at Hallie. She nodded and leaned back.
"Two hundred," the blond said. "Stand clear!"
He checked that no one was touching Kyle's body then said, "Hit
it!"
The other paramedic pushed a panel button. Two hundred joules
of electricity jolted Kyle's body, whipsawing his arms up and
down. His eyelids twitched.
